| “127 Hours” Gets a Standing Ovation at Toronto Film Festival | |
|
Last night, at the first public screening since its world premiere at Telluride last week, Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours” had an audience of eager Toronto Film Festival-goers squirming in their seats — and then jumping to their feet for a standing ovation. Based on the true story of outdoorsman Aron Ralston (played by James Franco), who was forced to amputate part of his own arm after it got stuck under a boulder, the film (out Nov. 5) is an intense, graphic, and (at around 90 minutes) compact experience that had plenty of viewers peeking at the screen through parted fingers. The climactic amputation scene in particular drew a a few muffled yelps from moviegoers who broke out in applause when the limb was finally severed. Following a lengthy standing ovation, filmmaker Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) took the stage, accompanied by star James Franco (Eat Pray Love) and the real Aron Ralston himself, who fought back tears while describing the experience of watching the movie with an audience that included his wife and sister.
Franco, whose performance is already earning Oscar buzz, paid back the compliment, giving thanks to Ralston for sharing not only his recollections of the incident, but also the actual video tapes he shot while stuck in the canyon seven years ago. “I’ve really never seen anything like that,” said the actor. “It guided me through the performance.” (Source) |

| No Sibling Rivarly Between the Mara Sisters | |
|
With more than 40 million copies sold around the world, author Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is an international phenomenon, having spawned a Swedish film that became one of the highest grossing foreign films ever. Now though, the franchise is heading west with an American remake of Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy heading to the big screen. Everyone from Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, to Kristen Stewart and Ellen Page, was reportedly after the lead female role of Lisbeth Salander, but it was a relative unknown actress — AccessHollywood.com’s newest Rising Star, Rooney Mara — who nabbed the part. So who is she? Horror fans know the brunette beauty as Nancy Holbrook, the girl who stared down Freddy Krueger in the 2010 remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”
In taking on the role, Rooney will give her own stamp to the part, which was originated by Swedish actress Noomi Rapace. Noomi had said she had no interest in reprising the role, although she is interested in breaking into the U.S. film market, having just signed with a talent agency and management company in Hollywood. Rooney’s older sister, Kate Mara, has been around for more than a decade, most recently appearing in “Iron Man 2,” but there is no sibling rivalry of which to speak.
